Sultan Alp Arslan, the greatest sultan of the Great Seljuk Empire, conqueror of the Byzantines and conqueror of Anatolia, was the successor of his uncle Tughril Beg during his campaigns in Iraq and southern Iran. He assumed power after Tughril Beg's death and appointed Nizam al-Mulk as his vizier. He conquered Armenia, Georgia, and other lands along the Anatolian route, and triumphed over the Byzantine Empire at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071 CE. Upon his death, he bequeathed the rule of the Seljuk state to his son, Malik Shah, who continued his legacy. Several dramatic works have been produced about him and his life, including the Alp Arslan series and the film Manzikert 1071.
