Gui-lan is a 2nd-generation Yunnanese woman who was born in Taiwan. She and her transgender younger son run a small eatery together, while she and her elder son, though living nearby, haven't spoken in years. However, though bad blood and broken promises over money and property have soured family relationships, the family's energy and courage to push on in the face of adversity is an inspiration to all.
