This video provides a detailed tour of our custom-designed, mid-century modern lake house, highlighting the key decisions that led to an affordable, beautiful, and low-maintenance lifestyle. Kitchen & Storage Solutions Our kitchen features highly recommended IKEA cabinets and quartz countertops, chosen for their practicality, cost-effectiveness, and excellent storage, including convenient drawer-within-a-drawer designs. Learn about our appliance choices, such as the built-in-look microwave and propane stove. Due to our rural location (45 minutes from the nearest store), we rely on a second, fully-stocked refrigerator in the garage. The kitchen boasts a 10-foot island and maximizes the stunning lake view while cooking. Open Concept Living & Design We designed a large, open-concept space (18 ft wide, 55 ft long) to minimize walls and maximize light and views. The furniture reflects our love for the minimalist aesthetic, with pieces sourced from West Elm, CB2, and vintage finds. We embrace the feeling of coziness (hygge) in this secure, smaller space. Private Spaces & Guest Accommodations See our space-saving bedroom, which utilizes clever storage by Container Store in the closet instead of a traditional dresser. The home features efficient mini-split air conditioning. The upstairs loft, complete with IKEA trundle beds, is a perfect, semi-private grandkids' hangout and gaming area. Outside, a separate guest house offers a comfortable, hotel-like stay for visiting family. Building & Financial Freedom Our home was constructed by Kangaroo Systems (a prefab builder specializing in tiny homes). We opted for a less expensive shell build, finishing the interior ourselves over the course of a year. Being able to pay cash for the house following the sale of our previous home provided the biggest gain: financial freedom in retirement. We also enjoy surprisingly low utility bills for electricity and water. Outdoor Living Enjoy a look at our expansive 71-foot deck and the breezy porch area where we spend 80% of our time, soaking in the beautiful Texas sunsets over the lake.
