People in Britain had “better learn to speak Russian” if they are not prepared to ramp up defence spending to five per cent and meet the growing military threat from Vladimir Putin, Nato’s secretary-general has warned. Mark Rutte said all Nato countries were “on the eastern flank now” with the latest advances in Russian missile technology that could allow Putin to hit targets in Western countries in a “matter of minutes”. He also warned that Russia was now producing more ammunition in three months than the whole of Nato was producing in a year and could realistically be in a position to threaten the alliance militarily within three to five years.
