At our annual meeting, Dr. Ian Lipkin of the Center for Solutions for ME/CFS discussed important abnormalities in people with ME/CFS (myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome) which were found by analyzing biological samples, and he makes suggestions for future clinical trials. Some of his findings included: •In spite of high overall levels of gut bacteria, the levels of gut bacteria which produce butyrate--a compound which is not only anti-inflammatory, but supports GI motility and controls the intestinal barrier--are low. •Increases in specific types of B-cells that would be seen in an infection or autoimmune phenomenon. •Increased citric acid in blood of ME/CFS patients after exercise, indicating problems with energy metabolism. Dr. Ian Lipkin is the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) ME/CFS Collaborative Research Center at Columbia University, the Center for Solutions for ME/CFS. The Center examines biological samples from people with ME/CFS and healthy controls for microbial agents, such as viruses and bacteria, that may play a role in the disease. Dr. Lipkin is internationally recognized for infectious disease diagnosis, surveillance, and discovery and has been at the forefront of outbreak response to many of the world’s recent outbreaks of West Nile Virus , SARS, Zika, encephalitis, and COVID-19.
