In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy breaks down the anatomy and function of the spinocerebellar tracts, essential ascending pathways that carry unconscious proprioceptive information to the cerebellum. We begin by discussing the receptors involved, including muscle spindles and Golgi tendon organs, which detect muscle length, stretch, and tension. These first-order neurons enter the spinal cord via the dorsal roots and synapse in specialized regions such as Clarke’s nucleus (for the dorsal spinocerebellar tract) or the spinal border cells (for the ventral spinocerebellar tract). The lecture then explores the key differences between the dorsal and ventral spinocerebellar tracts. The dorsal tract remains ipsilateral as it ascends to the cerebellum via the inferior cerebellar peduncle, transmitting precise information from the lower limbs and trunk. In contrast, the ventral tract undergoes a unique double-crossing—first in the spinal cord and again in the brainstem—before entering the cerebellum through the superior cerebellar peduncle, providing integrated motor feedback from the lower body. We also cover the cuneocerebellar and rostral spinocerebellar tracts, which serve similar proprioceptive functions for the upper limbs.
