It’s one of those things that, if it’s wrong, can quietly cost your organisation millions. I share three real case studies from projects we’ve been involved in over the years, each showing how poor data can derail warehouse design, MRO planning, and even major consolidation projects… and how fixing it can save a fortune. The first example comes from a large mining and resources operation. Massive equipment, tens of thousands of spares, and a team trying to work out whether they needed a new warehouse or even off-site storage. Sounds straightforward until you realise their inventory data came from three different systems… and none of them matched. Before any design work could begin, they had to spend six months cleaning and verifying inventory records, checking criticality, removing obsolete stock, and confirming what was truly needed. It was painful, but it meant the final warehouse was built to the right size, saving millions in unnecessary construction. The second case, again in resources, involved an expanding operation with ballooning SKUs and multiple small warehouses scattered around their sites. They wanted to consolidate—but had no reliable weights and dimensions. Rather than measure everything themselves, they went to around 50 core suppliers and requested full product specs. It took time, but it allowed a highly accurate warehouse design and prevented an oversized or undersized facility, which would have been a very expensive mistake given the $25M they were spending on storage equipment alone. The final story is from an industrial products merger where three businesses became one. With overlapping SKUs and inconsistent product codes, they urgently needed reliable master data. Renting scanning and dimensioning equipment, they processed about 30,000 items in two months, creating a precise product master and enabling an accurate warehouse layout and slotting strategy. So the big question is: how good is your data? Because when inventory data is right, everything else becomes far easier—and cheaper.
