Belarusian Nobel Peace Prize winner Ales Bialiatski said on Saturday (December 13) that he was ready to continue his work as a human rights defender after he was freed with other prisoners following talks between Belarus and the United States. Bialiatski told Reuters he had spent the previous night on a prison bunk in a room with nearly 40 people, and was still coming to grips with the idea of being free. He said the goals for human rights and democracy in Belarus, for which he and his fellow-campaigners had been awarded the Nobel prize, had still not been realised. "Thousands of people have been and continue to be imprisoned... So our struggle continues," he said. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko released 123 prisoners on Saturday after two days of talks with an envoy for President Donald Trump, a U.S. statement said. In return, the United States agreed to lift sanctions on Belarusian potash.
