Beyond Christmas tells the story of three wealthy, elderly New York businessmen and engineering partners —George Melton (Harry Carey), Allan Chadwick (C. Aubrey Smith), and Michael O'Brien (Charles Winninger)— who, lonely on Christmas Eve, decide to throw their wallets out of their shared mansion window. Their plan is to invite any honest stranger who returns a wallet containing money and a business card to join their Christmas dinner. Two people return the wallets: James Houston (Richard Carlson), a displaced Texas cowboy and aspiring singer, and Jean Lawrence (Jean Parker), a kind schoolteacher. The three older men and their eccentric Russian housekeeper, Madame Tanya (Maria Ouspenskaya), form a deep, familial bond with the young couple, acting as matchmakers. However, tragedy strikes when the three engineers are killed in a plane crash during an urgent business trip. Their spirits return to the house as ghosts, sensed only by Madame Tanya, and they become determined to use their spectral influence to guide James and Jean, whose burgeoning romance is threatened when James finds sudden fame as a singer and is tempted by the manipulative, glamorous starlet Arlene Terry.
