Jim Garry (Robert Mitchum) is through with his old friend Tate Riling (Robert Preston) and his conman plots. When Rilings men come after Lufton, he stands up to them, though Lufton and Amy do not fully trust him. As Garry heads back to Texas and out of this mess, he is tracked down by Riling who makes one more attempt to get Garry to do his dirty work.
