You'll be able to feel and hear when they're worn, although your car will tell you before then. There's an electronic sensor that gets tripped once the pads wear to a certain level, and it'll trip a warning message on your instrument cluster. Failing to change them will result in metal-on-metal contact and steel shavings being thrown into your wheels and suspension.
