Was this the worst surprise you could give your partner in Vietnam, or is this something absolutely spectacular? Which woman doesn't want a bit of romance in her relationship? A thoughtful romantic surprise perhaps? Moving abroad comes with a lot of uncertainties, but when you move with your partner you have the safety net of your constant best friend — your common denominator for everything. I have always been grateful for having a consistent relationship, however this move has brought so many surprises, hurdles and pranks. It’s made my partner completely unpredictable… and honestly, I kinda like it. Apart from the crazy itineraries he plans and last-minute trips, he also makes a lot of impetuous decisions that keep our life spontaneous. Just sometimes, I am too tired for this spontaneity — especially when it includes me having to learn a life skill ON the spot, surrounded by busy traffic in a foreign country. My partner bought me a motorbike in Vietnam… but I don’t know how to ride a motorbike, let alone ride a motorbike in Vietnam. In this vlog, I truly go through the full emotional spectrum: confusion, annoyance, excitement, fear, overwhelm, pride and finally that “I can’t believe I did this” feeling that makes expat life so addictive. We went to a motorbike shop in Da Nang, and remember: you DO need an international licence to legally ride here, so make sure you get one before moving. You can either rent a bike or purchase one from a local dealer — they usually get better prices than the big showrooms. For most expats living in Da Nang, owning a bike isn’t just convenient, it’s essential. But that doesn’t mean learning is easy. The Vietnamese traffic is another level. The rules are more like guidelines, the flow is chaotic, and the confidence of local riders is unmatched. So imagine being 30 years old, abroad, and suddenly needing to master a completely new skill just to keep up with everyday life. It’s humbling, terrifying and weirdly empowering at the same time. Living abroad forces you to mould yourself into completely new environments — and sometimes you don’t realise how much you’ve grown until a moment like this hits you. Learning a new skill at 30, especially in a completely different culture, teaches you resilience, patience, and that beautiful expat lesson: you are capable of far more than you think.
