T2 tankers, Victory and especially Liberty ships have gone down in history for a number of reasons, namely their integral contribution to the Allied victory of World War II, the incredible story of their creation but, on a rather less positive note, their early tendency to split in two. As if they were afflicted by some kind of curse, the SS Schenectady was far from the only early war industry ship to meet a catastrophic end. Then came SS John P Gaines, SS Pendleton and Fort Mercer. Something was evidently going very wrong and it would go on to teach lessons in shipbuilding that are still in use to this day.
