A China Coast Guard formation sailed through waters near the Japan-administered Senkaku Islands on 16 November in what Beijing called a “rights enforcement patrol” amid escalating tensions over Taiwan. The move followed Chinese anger at Japanese prime minister Sanae Takaichi’s warning that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could trigger a military response from Tokyo. Japan rebuked Beijing for advising its citizens to avoid travel to Japan as China warned that any Japanese interference would face a “crushing defeat”.
