Our adventure begins in the Barrio Histórico, the UNESCO-listed historic quarter known for its maze of cobbled streets, centuries-old homes, and fascinating mix of Spanish and Portuguese colonial architecture. Wandering through these narrow lanes, we’re instantly captivated by the town’s old-world charm. A must-see spot is Calle de los Suspiros (Street of Sighs) – arguably the prettiest street in all of Colonia. Its picturesque facade, rustic stone walls, and brightly painted doors transport you back in time. But remember: it’s popular, so you’ll need patience to capture a crowd-free photo! 🛡️ City Gates & Fortified Walls: Tracing the Footsteps of History ⚔️🌉 Colonia was built on a peninsula stretching into the mighty River Plate, so fortifications were vital. Entering through Puerto de la Ciudadela (the old city gate), you immediately get a sense of the scale of these ancient defenses. The walls are massive, over a meter thick, made of solid granite to withstand cannon fire from would-be invaders. While much of the original fortress is gone, the remaining ramparts and gate offer a vivid glimpse into Colonia’s strategic importance over the centuries. 🐕 Waterfront Walks & Beach Vibes: Dogs, Sand & Sunset by the River Plate 🌅🏖️ As we stroll through the old town, we can’t resist befriending some of the many friendly street dogs, who love a game of fetch on the riverbank. Colonia’s location on the Río de la Plata means there are several beaches scattered around town, with golden sand and gentle waves that feel just like the ocean. You’ll spot locals and visitors swimming, sunbathing, and making the most of the humid, subtropical climate. 🍽️ Uruguayan Flavors: Chivito & Milanesa – Monster Portions & Local Classics 🍔🥩 Lunch is a highlight in Colonia! We sample two classic Uruguayan dishes: Milanesa (veal schnitzel topped with ham, mozzarella, and tomato sauce) and the legendary Chivito. Despite the name, Chivito isn’t made from goat (as it is in Argentina), but from beef steak piled high with ham, mozzarella, fried egg, olives, bacon, Russian salad, and mountains of French fries. Both dishes are hearty, heavy, and incredibly satisfying. 🌇 Golden Hour: Sunset Strolls & Gastro Bar Treats on the Waterfront 🍷🌅 Our favorite time to experience Colonia is at sunset, when the light turns golden and a gentle breeze cools the town. Locals flock to the riverfront, restaurants and cafés buzz with laughter, and the entire city glows. We settle in at a recommended gastro bar, enjoying a glass of local Malbec and a creamy shrimp risotto as the sun sinks below the horizon. The risotto is beautifully cheesy, reminiscent of our travels in Croatia and Milan. 🏛️ Morning Walks & Museum Hopping: Immersed in Colonia’s Story 🖼️📚 On our second day, we wake to perfect spring weather and take another stroll through the flower-filled streets. Next up is museum hopping! For just 50 pesos (about $1), a museum pass lets you visit multiple small museums around the historic core—each with a different theme, from the lives of early colonizers to local flora and fauna. Exhibits are concise and approachable. 🍕 Pizza Lunch & Scenic Views: The Perfect Farewell to Colonia 🍕👀 For our final meal in Colonia, we queue up at one of the town’s most popular pizza joints. The pizzas are loaded with toppings: ham, mozzarella, tangy tomato sauce, anchovies, onions, and peppers—each bite is bursting with flavor. The restaurant’s prime location also offers stellar views.
