But how did this legendary arcade game come to life? It all started with a failure: Radar Scope, a game that Nintendo had produced for the American market, turned out to be a commercial disaster, leaving the company with thousands of unsold arcade cabinets. To solve this problem, Nintendo’s president Hiroshi Yamauchi assigned Miyamoto the task of creating a new game that could reuse those cabinets... and thus, Donkey Kong was born! INSPIRED BY KING KONG AND POPEYE Initially, Nintendo wanted to develop a game based on Popeye, featuring Popeye, Bluto, and Olive Oyl as the main characters. However, they failed to obtain the rights, so Miyamoto decided to create original characters instead: ✅ Donkey Kong – a mischievous giant ape, inspired by Bluto. ✅ Jumpman – a mustached hero who would later become Mario. ✅ Pauline – the kidnapped girl that Jumpman must save. But why the name Donkey Kong? Miyamoto wanted to express the idea of a stubborn and mischievous ape. After checking an English dictionary, he found that "donkey" could mean "stubborn" and "kong" was a reference to gorillas! A GAME AHEAD OF ITS TIME Unlike other games of the era, such as Pac-Man or Space Invaders, Donkey Kong didn’t stick to a single-screen format. It introduced vertical levels, platforms, and ladders, laying the groundwork for the platformer genre. The gameplay was simple yet challenging: players had to dodge rolling barrels, fire, and other hazards while trying to rescue Pauline. A fun fact? Mario was originally a carpenter, not a plumber! THE LAWSUIT WITH UNIVERSAL STUDIOS The massive success of Donkey Kong caught the attention of Universal Studios, which sued Nintendo, claiming the game was a ripoff of King Kong. However, lawyer John Kirby proved that Universal did not have exclusive rights to the name, leading to Nintendo’s victory! As a token of gratitude, Nintendo named one of its most iconic franchises Kirby after him!
