HRH the Duke of Windsor (1894-1972, formerly King Edward VIII) is interviewed by Georg Stefan Troller for the German TV programme "Pariser Journal" in his home in Paris. According to the interviewer's memoirs, the interview was originally scheduled in English. When the Duke found out that the interviewer was Austrian and it was to be shown on German TV, he spontaneously decided, to everyone's amazement, to try and answer the questions in German. Troller recalls that the Duke's German was not perfect but fairly fluent, and that he spoke, amusingly enough, with a slight Viennese accent. In a private talk afterwards, the Duke stated that he learned German in his youth while staying with his cousins and the Rothschild family in Austria.
