SOUNDBITE (English) Katherine LaNasa, actor (winner, best supporting actress in a drama, "The Pitt") - on wanting to work with John Wells. "I'm a huge fan of John Wells. When I was coming up, when I was a young actress, he was one of the few people that were putting real women on television, women that looked like real women and that had complex emotions. It was a lot of anorexic sexpots with glasses to make them look smart, except for on a John Wells show. So that was before streaming, where women started to get more complicated. So I was super excited about working with him. But... I asked him when we were doing our boot camp before we started season one, I said, 'What is it that you're looking for? Is it like a documentary?' And he said, 'No. In a documentary, you identify the subject.' He said, 'I want it to feel like you're inside it.' And once I got that, it's like, I think we all clicked. Like it just has to be like raw. Like there's no, nothing in front of you. You just have to bring your naked self to it." 2. Medium Amy Madigan walks to camera 3. "Well, when I first read the script, to be honest with you, I knew it was a very special piece of work. And the character I play, Aunt Gladys, I just kind of fell in love with her. She's an outsider and she knows exactly what she has to do. She has a lot of confidence. And I just knew the piece itself, broken down in chapters, people were gonna really get the story. So I kind of knew from the beginning and then when we were working on the film, I went, oh, I think this is gonna be a good film. But I had no idea that Aunt Gladys, boom, would explode like that. I really didn't. So that's a great surprise and a great honor." 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Tom Pelphrey, actor (nominee, best supporting actor, "Task") "I think sometimes when you can tell a story where all the characters in it are complex and relatable, that people are drawn to that. I know that sounds simple, but I think Brad (Ingelsby) wrote that and I think we're able to kind of bring it to life in a way that people respond to. It's like, there's kind of no hero and there's kind of no villain. Yeah, and HBO was fully behind it, which never hurts." 5. I mean, I think also my character, you know, I play an American actress, so there is a lot of meta elements. And I think, I kind of realized how much it meant to me while we were filming it, because I think I brought a lot of my own emotions and my own thoughts into her, but also had to, you know, form a different type of actress. She's not, she's also not me, but just the challenge of the layers of that. And it felt very cathartic at times, you know? And I think the movie is, it's such an emotional film, what Joachim (Trier) has been able to capture with, you know, the story of complicated families, but then also how we view our art.
