Celebrated as Germany’s first Olympic gold medalist in men’s athletics at the 1936 Summer Olympics, Woellke became a symbol of the “New Germany” Adolf Hitler wanted the world to admire. His victory was immortalized in Leni Riefenstahl’s Olympia, turning him into a national idol and a tool of Nazi propaganda. But behind the image of a disciplined athlete stood a man who soon became part of one of the most violent formations of the Second World War. During the German occupation of the Soviet Union, Woellke served as an officer in Battalion 118, a unit that operated alongside the notorious Dirlewanger Brigade—one of the most brutal SS formations on the Eastern Front. Their joint operations in Belarus, including Operation Hornung, resulted in the destruction of entire villages and the mass murder of civilians accused of aiding Soviet partisans. These actions left thousands dead and scarred the region permanently. On 22 March 1943, Soviet partisans ambushed Woellke’s convoy near the village of Khatyn. His death triggered a savage reprisal. Dirlewanger’s men, together with Woellke’s battalion, surrounded Khatyn, locked its residents—mostly women and children—inside a barn, set it on fire, and shot anyone who tried to escape. Around 149 civilians were murdered.
