Narrator: Marchand Steenkamp. About the story: The Massacre of the Lwów Professors stands as one of the most painful and deliberate intellectual assassinations of the Second World War. When Nazi Germany launched its invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, the city of Lwów (today Lviv, Ukraine) fell within days. Behind the frontlines came the Einsatzgruppen and the Gestapo—carrying out the Nazi plan to eliminate the Polish elite and destroy the cultural foundations of the occupied nation. Lwów, long known for its universities, scholars, and vibrant academic life, became an early target. The Nazi occupation authorities viewed Polish professors, scientists, doctors, and writers as potential leaders of resistance. On the night of 3–4 July 1941, German officers arrested 27 professors from the Jan Kazimierz University and the Lwów Polytechnic, along with approximately 25 of their wives, sons, and household members. Taken to the Bursa Abrahamowiczów and later to the Wulka hills, the professors were interrogated, beaten, and executed at dawn. Their bodies were buried in shallow pits, later exhumed and burned in 1943 when the Germans attempted to erase evidence of their crimes. The perpetrators—Schöngarth, Hans Krueger, Felix Landau, Walter Kutschmann, and others—continued their involvement in mass executions across occupied Poland and Eastern Europe. After the war, most were captured and faced justice: some were executed, some sentenced to life imprisonment, and others pursued for decades until their final arrest. For years, the memory of the murdered scholars was suppressed under Soviet rule. Only after 1991 could historians fully reconstruct the events. Today, a monument in Lviv honors the victims and reminds the world of a brutal Nazi operation aimed at destroying the intellectual heart of Poland.
