Stepan Bandera remains one of the most divisive figures of World War II. To some, he is remembered as a fierce Ukrainian nationalist who fought against both Nazi and Soviet domination. To others, he symbolizes a dangerous radical whose movement was responsible for widespread atrocities, including the murder of thousands of civilians during the Nazi occupation of Poland and Ukraine. Born in 1909 in Staryi Uhryniv, Bandera became politically active at a young age, joining the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN). After a series of violent actions — including the assassinations of Polish officials — he was sentenced to life in prison in interwar Poland. Released during the collapse of the Polish state in 1939, Bandera took leadership of the OUN-B faction and aligned temporarily with Nazi Germany, hoping to establish an independent Ukrainian state. In June 1941, OUN-B declared independence in Lviv, shortly after the launch of Operation Barbarossa. This act, while unauthorized by the Nazis, coincided with pogroms and mass violence against Jews and Poles. Though Bandera was arrested by the Gestapo later that year and imprisoned in Sachsenhausen, his supporters continued to act under the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), led by figures like Roman Shukhevych and Ivan Klymchak. The UPA became notorious for its brutal ethnic cleansing campaigns, particularly the Volhynia and Eastern Galicia massacres, where tens of thousands of Polish civilians were killed. These crimes have since been classified by many historians as acts of genocide. After the war, Bandera fled to the West, living in Munich and working with various anti-Soviet exile groups. His life came to a dramatic end in 1959, when a KGB agent assassinated him using a concealed cyanide spray device. Today, Bandera’s legacy is sharply contested. While some in Ukraine view him as a symbol of national resistance, others — particularly in Poland, Russia, and Israel — see him as a collaborator and war criminal.
