Robert Duvall was an actor’s actor, much admired and award-nominated for his ability to get inside a wide range of characters in memorable movies like Apocalypse Now and The Godfather. Duvall died at his Middleburg, Virginia, home on February 15, 2026. He was 95. The son of an admiral, Duvall attended Principia College and served in the Army during the Korean War. His early acting career was primarily in theater until he played Boo Radley in the film To Kill a Mockingbird. That led to a series of more important character performances in the 1970s: • Major Frank Burns in MASH* • Lawyer Tom Hagen in The Godfather • Lt. Colonel Bill Kilgore in Apocalypse Now • A conflicted father and military man in The Great Santini In 1983, Duvall received the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of a washed-up country and western singer in Tender Mercies. On television, Duvall won praise for his portrayals of Joseph Stalin and Adolf Eichmann. He also directed a film about his love of tango, called Assassination Tango. In all of his work, whether as the lead or in a character role, Robert Duvall always showed a huge respect for the craft of filmmaking. He continued to act until late in his life. His famous colleagues have shown their admiration for him and his work with the tributes they have offered to his loving family, who were with him when he died.
