Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has confirmed that he will make a third attempt at tabling the 2025 national budget on the 21st of next month. Last week, the National Treasury announced its decision to reverse its proposed 0.5 percentage point VAT increase following contestation from political parties. Godongwana says the government remains committed to its strategic path to strengthening health, education, and social services. The Treasury hosted a media briefing at the Government Communications and Information Services, GCIS, to explain the technical process that must now be undertaken regarding the 2025 budget. The Western Cape High Court ruled on April 27th that a VAT increase must be halted due to a legal challenge by the DA and the EFF. It also said the constitution doesn't permit parliament to delegate power on tax decisions to its executive. Let's take you there live.
