Sometimes it can be fun to hate something, to point and laugh at, even chastise the flavour of the week. Gotham Knights, SSKTJL, The latest Call of Duty’s, those are games people wanted to see fail; does that make those games secretly good? No, but it does beg the question; how do we get there? How does a game with a budget of $100 million dollars have this much hatred and disdain from players who have yet to play the game? The answer is marketing; but if it were that shallow, then the game would have garnered a cult following and word of mouth would hail the games true qualities far higher than articles lambasting a trailer. So why didn’t that happen with Forspoken? Well, I think we can find the answer by looking at the games pre release marketing, the game itself, and analysing the reception to the game and its DLCs to see how Square Enix ended up with a $100 million flop on their hands. Because if after one year Forspoken could give us anything, it would be a lesson, and who knows, maybe there's some fun to be had in the game itself along the way. While I believe it's true, Forspoken was a game that people already wanted to see fail; I was not one of those people, and I am approaching this game as I do basically every other game I cover, which is an attempt to meet it halfway, find the good qualities, because no matter the game, even if it’s not for me, I want to see games succeed. Especially games like Forspoken. An original, interesting IP, with gameplay that looks like this? Sign me up. You gotta remember I am an InFAMOUS fan, which means as far as new InFAMOUS media goes, I starved to death a decade ago; so if you show me gameplay that even half resembles one of my favourite franchises, you’re gonna get tweets like this show tweets yea ok guys laugh it up, real funny! Needless to say, the release of Forspoken left me devastated. In fact, the release was so bad, I didn’t even buy the game, because unfortunately I have been here before. Every time I am hyped for a game, it ends up being shitty, or surrounded with enough controversy to kill any hype I had. Jedi Survivor, Gotham Knights, hell I even held out hope for Avengers and Suicide Squad. So now, with Forspoken, another victim of what I believe to be poor marketing and front loaded issues, I think looking back on it’s small victories and many failings after a whole year, could show us not just why people hated the game, but in some ways, how the game wanted us to hate it. Forspoken is a game that made a larger splash online than it did on the market. Looking at Forspoken 1 year later could allow us to understand why it was so hated. Looking at any Forspoken review or even a post-hype Forspoken critique will point to the dialogue more than anything. This Forspoken analysis will focus more on the Forspoken gameplay, and discuss the Forspoken In Tanta We Trust expansion. The Forspoken story will get plenty of attention still, and I still want deliver Forspoken explained to the best of my ability. However, I also want to note the Forspoken reaction on the internet, as no Forspoken retrospective is complete without talking about the critical reception that was poor enough to result in Luminous Productions being closed. Despite what the Forspoken ending might tease, a Forspoken sequel will likely never come, and that's a shame. I played Forspoken so you don't have to, and now I can explain what happened to Forspoken, the Forspoken developers, all while getting in on the Forspoken cringe, the Forspoken memes, and showcase the Forspoken dialogue that we all love so much.
