Unemployment was up for the second straight month in Canada and August reached the highest level since 2016, outside of the pandemic years, according to new data. Statistics Canada reported that the national jobless rate climbed to 7.1 per cent last month, from 6.9 per cent in July. Anne Gaviola reports on this and more on how trade uncertainty hammered the labour market. Plus, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced new supports for those unemployed Canadians today, one part of a multi-billion-dollar package aimed at transforming the economy. The plan includes a new 'Buy Canada' policy and training programs, to help businesses and workers hit hard by U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs. The government says it wants to go from U.S. reliance to resilience. David Akin has the latest, An orthopaedic surgeon from Saskatchewan has returned home after witnessing some of the suffering in Gaza firsthand. Canada and several other countries are preparing to recognize Palestinian statehood at the United Nations later this month. But after her visit, Dr. Deirdre Nunan says what's needed most in the strip is unrestricted access to aid. Neetu Garcha has her story. And, a Winnipeg grocer and his staff are being sued by a self-professed career criminal. The alleged thief says he was beaten by the store's employees while attempting to steal a car from the parking lot last year.
