As an OT, I know my way around accessible design. In fact, I spent a good bit of time between 2017-2020 doing a lot of home accessibility assessments as part of a clinical consulting roll. But, there’s a difference between making sure something is physically accessible and designing healthcare spaces. Not only do healthcare spaces require more in the way of codes and regulations, but there are other factors that need to be considered. Things like space, traffic, bathroom locations, etc. all impact the efficiency and effectiveness of a clinic’s space. There’s also budgets that need to be considered. So, this week, I sit down with Sharon Woodworth, MA from UCSF’s Healthcare Administration & Interprofessional Leadership Program. She’s also a healthcare architect with Harley Ellis Devereaux (HED). We talk about Sharon’s creation of the 5 Point Keystone Star and how it can guide healthcare space design. What we cover in this Episode: -The importance of the physical space when it comes to healing and healthcare service delivery -How the right space may help reduce clinician burnout -Why it all revolves around the patient -Improving access through design -Achieving Better Outcomes by designing healing spaces #healthcare #healthcaredesign #accessibledesign #thebetteroutcomesshow
