This video is an update on my self-hosting journey as I tackle the biggest challenge in the smart home space: Internet Dependence. I love the control and privacy that Home Assistant provides, but I realized my Wi-Fi devices were still relying on slow, unreliable cloud connections. So, I took the plunge and converted my entire setup to use Zigbee and Z-Wave. This dramatically improved reliability and response time, but it created a new problem: Convenience. In this video, I walk through my solution: integrating cheap Android tablets as dedicated, always-on Home Assistant dashboards. I show you: - Why Zigbee mesh networking provides instantaneous, reliable control. - The exact, inexpensive tablets I used for my dashboards. - How I use Fully Kiosk for smart power management and motion activation. - The incredible automation I built for my son to grant him independence using a simple touchscreen button!
