You can make Coffee Liqueur with any spirit you choose- Vodka, Rum and Bourbon are all in my line-up. But keep in mind that the spirit will affect the flavor of the coffee liqueur. Kahlua is very VERY easy to make. The brand "Kahlua" uses white rum. Many people use vodka in Kahlua, and I personally love Bourbon in Kahlua. If you want something that's more along the lines of Mr. Black, I suggest using Vodka as your base spirit, and espresso for your coffee syrup.
