An Associated Press investigation linking big U.S. tech companies — Microsoft, Nvidia, Dell and others — to China's surveillance system reveals the significant role many of these firms played in sustaining the Chinese police state. The firms' sale of their technology has enabled abuses such as mass detention and predictive policing, which targets dissidents and ethnic minorities such as the Uyghur population. Despite warnings on how their products were being used, U.S. companies pushed forward with sales in exchange for billions of dollars. The author of the report, Dake Kang, sits down with Hari to discuss how this technology permits exploitation.
