Hyundai Kia Motor Group, incl. niche-brand Genesis, with about 7 million produced cars per year, is the third largest manufacturer in the world after Toyota and Volkswagen. Hyundai is committed to bringing a wide range of electric cars on the market and will deliver as many as 23 fully electric models by 2030. The Ioniq 9 is the Hyundai flagship. And it drives exceptionally well. It is super-quiet and comfortable, well up there with the BMW iX. The long wheel base of 313 cm gives a smooth ride on the highway but uneven surfaces at lower speeds are not entirely absorbed – here an air suspension would be more comfortable. The 428 HP from the two motors seem adequate, but the car is not overpowered relative to the weight. The front of the Ioniq 9 with the matrix headlamp looks very modern, and the roof drops to the back to make the car look a bit smaller and sportier, albeit the wheels are a bit american SUV-Cadillac style. This is a car which promises lots of space and comfort on long journeys. All Ioniq 9 come with a 110.3 kWh traction battery, 106 kWh net capacity. The Performance model has 428 HP, 214 HP at the rear and 214 up front. The top speed is 200 km/h, and 0-100 km/h takes 5.2 sec. It is built on the Hyundai e-GMP platform, and it weighs 2793 kg, so add a couple of passengers and some luggage, and the total weight exceeds 3 tons. As you would expect, there is ample space in the Ioniq 9; 52 litres in the frunk, and 2419 litres with the rear seats folded. Even with all seats used, there are still 338 litres of luggage space available, and additionally it can pull a trailer up to 2500 kg and take 100 kg on the roof. The manufacturer promises 10-80% charging in 24 minutes with up to 240 kW fast charging. I tested the charging time to be 25m35s from 12-80%, peaking at 226 kW at 26% SoC, using an ABB 300kW charger. In cold weather conditions, a good result. Another interesting feature is the V2L, vehicle-to-load, enabling you to charge your e-bike or a fridge, and potentially a V2G, Vehicle-to-Grid function which means your car can power your house and optimize your power grid. Hyundai offers a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty on the vehicle including the 48V battery. The warranty can be extended to 7 years for an additional 2,468 CHF or 2,500 Euros. This car costs 89,900 CHF plus the optional serenity white colour at 1,200 CHF, the captain seats cost 1,000 CHF and side boards 1479 CHF. There is also an optional trunk light for 170 CHF, bringing the total to 93,749 CHF. The Ioniq 9 is offered with a choice of six- or seven-seater configurations and three trim levels and four models: the base model Amplia 4x2 or 4x4, Vertex and Vertex Calligraphy performance. Families would choose the practical 7-seat configuration, empty nesters may prefer the more luxurious 6 seat configuration. The interior is quite contemporary, high-tech and comfortable. There’s a 12.3-inch digital cockpit and a 12.3-inch touchscreen fitted as standard. The 14-speaker Bose sound system with a center speaker and a sub-woofer gives an impressive sound experience combined with a quiet drive because of the active noise cancelling. There are six USB-C high-power charging ports, two per row, for charging devices with up to 100W and there is a 230 V power socket, too. The safety package includes everything on offer today from the premium brands plus remote Smartpark Assist. You get 10 airbags and the list continues with adaptive smart cruise control and lane change assist which works really well. I liked the big Hyundai. It ticks all the important boxes for a large family SUV, and the build quality is excellent. The Ioniq 9 is for the affluent family who wants a large electric luxurey SUV but not prepared to pay premium money for it. They are probably looking for a decent efficiency and a good range, low noise level, all the safety and assists, and good performance for long trips.
