In this video, I talk about my dismissal from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign resulting from a charge of COVID-19 Testing Noncompliance. SUMMARY: During the Fall 2020 semester, all students residing on the UIUC (University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign) campus were required to complete COVID-19 saliva testing twice a week. At the start of the semester, I was unable to receive saliva testing because of a dry mouth condition. During this time, I took on my own transmission-preventing measures, including: taking all my courses and extracurricular activities entirely online, significantly limiting my in-person interactions, and following all COVID safety protocols (masking and socially distancing). I have substantive evidence that I never caught nor spread COVID-19. One month into the semester, I was sent one warning and then was shortly charged with COVID-19 Testing Noncompliance. This prompted me to quickly learn how to extract saliva despite my dry mouth condition, and I also reached out to the University's health center for further guidance. Starting October 4th, I was able to develop and maintain a biweekly testing schedule until the day I left campus in late November. I explained my situation in full to my University case coordinator. On October 16th, the Subcommittee on Student Conduct found me guilty of COVID-19 Testing Noncompliance, and applied the following sanctions: dismissal from the University for one year, trespass notice physically banning me from University property, and a petition letter for readmission and petition requirements including academic or work experience, 70 hours of mandated service, and a 1500-word research paper on the topic of COVID-19 transmission, spread, and mitigating risk. I submitted an appeal on the ground that the dismissal sanction was not appropriate for my violation. This appeal was denied.
