I Save This Ancient Truck for £20. BAD IDEA! (Mr Hewes to the rescue)

In today’s episode of mechanical mayhem, we attempt the cheapest repair ever attempted on a 70-year-old Scammell Explorer… and somehow it actually works. We use £20 worth of modelling polyurethane and a 3D-printed mould to rebuild the destroyed Metalastik driveshaft coupler, take the Explorer out for a shakedown run, fill it with petrol, and bring it home without disaster. So far, so good… Then we try to take it on a 40-mile road run. Within one mile the Explorer breaks down, has to be towed to the start line, and only survives thanks to Mr Hewes fixing our magneto. After a long pull start from a Scammell Pioneer we’re back in business… until a spark plug fires itself out of the engine. We put on ear defenders, carry on (very loudly), inspect the damage, find FIVE more loose plugs, tighten everything, and limp it through the rest of the event. Somehow, we even make it home. The good news? Our £20 repair worked perfectly. The bad news? Everything else broke. Especially the Meadows engine. At the end of the video, I talk about the future of this ridiculous truck… including bolting a turbo and ECU on the old petrol engine.
