Indonesia is on the brink of an ecological catastrophe. Once-thriving forests and rich seas are now scarred by mines, factories, and relentless industrial expansion. Local communities struggle as fish vanish and pollution chokes the oceans. Entire tribes, previously untouched by modern life, face extinction. Jakarta, the nation’s capital, is sinking under rising seas, forcing the government to build a new city on Borneo—clearing forests and displacing villages in the process. Amid the crisis, activist Daru has spent 15 years battling plastic pollution, which clouds the air and contaminates food. Despite a 2019 ban, illegal shipments of plastic waste still flow in from Europe, South Korea, and Canada.
