The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in March 2024 triggered one of the largest marine recovery and rebuild efforts in U.S. history. Now, over a year later, crews are transitioning from cleanup to foundation work for a $1.8 billion, two-mile cable-stayed replacement—Maryland’s first of its kind. Rising more than 600 feet and spanning 1,600 feet between towers, the new bridge will expand the navigation channel, improve clearance by 45 feet, and meet modern vessel-collision standards with a 1 in 10,000 annual failure probability. Chosen for its strength, speed of construction, and reduced in-water footprint, the design also preserves the existing right-of-way to expedite review. Funded by federal relief, insurance, and toll revenue, construction is led by Kiewit under a progressive design-build contract. As test piles are driven and demolition continues, the rebuild represents both a technical leap and a symbol of recovery—one that could redefine Baltimore’s skyline for the next century.
