I visited Carl Pei of Nothing in London, UK, who has built the fastest growing smartphone company ever – right here in Europe. There is a reason no sane person starts a smartphone company today, especially not one outside of China. The industry is extremely brutal. Very few gigantic incumbents with huge economies of scale, very tight margins and dominating brands like Apple, Samsung and co. that are competing aggressively for market share. Carl Pei helped build OnePlus from a smaller, spin-off, local brand in China into a global Android powerhouse on par with Samsung, Oppo, Huawei, and Pixel. When he left OnePlus, he immediately knew he wasn't done creating. Since all phone brands have basically looked the same for the past 5-10 years, Carl asked himself "What if we could build a truely unique brand, with products that embody a young, fresh, different spirit that nobody else has anymore?" And then he just did it. Building Nothing into a billion euro revenue company in just a few years.
