A few days earlier he had made a public safety film warning about the dangers of driving too fast: In a head on collision at speed, there was only ever going to be one outcome - James Dean was dead at the age of 24. But in death, Dean was transformed from rising star to enduring legend – an eternal icon of youthful rebellion - and his smouldering image, immortalized in just three films, captivated the world and left us wondering why…. why he would risk throwing it all away. In this biographical documentary, Dr Graeme Yorston, explores the brief but brilliant life of James Dean, from his perspective as a psychiatrist. Tracing his journey from Midwestern farm boy to Hollywood heartthrob to reveal how his childhood traumas and restless spirit shaped the figure that lit up the screen to become a symbol of a generation’s yearning for something different. Finding Out More There are so many biographies of James Dean, it is hard to pick a front runner. I used Rebel: The Life and Legend of James Dean by Donald Spoto which is well-regarded and James Dean: The Mutant King by David Dalton, but I wasn’t at all impressed. The Real James Dean: Intimate Memories from Those Who Knew Him Best edited by Peter L. Winkler is a collection of first-person accounts, providing contradictory but valuable insights.
