Japan has been hit by another powerful earthquake just days after a 7.5 magnitude tremor rattled the nation’s northeast. Late Monday night, a 7.5 magnitude quake struck about 80 kilometers off the coast of Aomori prefecture, triggering tsunami waves and injuring at least 23 people across multiple communities. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported tsunami surges of up to 70 centimeters in Iwate’s Kuji port, with additional waves hitting towns along the Pacific coastline. Authorities briefly issued tsunami alerts for potential waves up to 3 meters, later downgraded to an advisory. Residents were urged to evacuate to higher ground as aftershocks continued through the night. The late-night quake caused injuries largely from falling debris, power outages across several hundred homes, and the suspension of bullet trains. A small spill—about 450 liters—from a spent fuel cooling facility at the Rokkasho nuclear plant prompted immediate safety checks, though regulators reported no broader safety threat.
