One of Japan’s most respected physicians, Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara, who lived past the age of 100 and continued working well into his later years, consistently emphasized simple daily habits over medical extremes. Today, Japanese researchers such as Dr. Shinya Hayasaka, who has spent decades studying the health effects of bathing, and Dr. Satoshi Yamasaki of Kyushu University, who has researched hot spring use in older adults, are helping to explain why these rituals may matter. Their work suggests that longevity in Japan is not built on hacks, but on repeatable practices — many of which can be adapted and practiced at home, even far from Japan’s natural hot springs. Much of what we know today about the health effects of bathing in Japan comes from the work of Dr. Shinya Hayasaka, a medical doctor and professor at Tokyo City University, who has spent more than two decades studying bathing and natural hot spring use in older adults. His research began not in a laboratory, but with a practical concern. Over twenty years ago, a visiting nurse caring for an elderly patient contacted him with a simple but serious question: her patient often had high blood pressure, and she wasn’t sure whether regular bathing was safe. At the time, there was very little scientific evidence to guide such decisions. Recognizing this gap, Dr. Hayasaka began studying bathing from a medical perspective, publishing his first paper in The Journal of Epidemiology in 1991, which focused on safety and careful monitoring in older adults. As his work expanded, he shifted from short-term risk to long-term outcomes. In collaboration with researchers at Chiba University, he followed more than 14,000 elderly individuals over a three-year period, examining how habitual bathing related to aging and independence.
