In this video I discuss how jealousy and envy relate to the expression of borderline personality disorder traits and components. Which do you think is more impactful for those with BPD? Envy is a two-person situation whereas jealousy is a three-person situation. Envy is a reaction to lacking something. Jealousy is a reaction to the threat of losing something (usually someone). BPD factors related to jealousy: • Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment J • Identity disturbance: markedly and persistently unstable self-image or sense of self. E • A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships with extremes of idealization and devaluation. J & E • Impulsivity in at least two areas that are potentially self-damaging (e.g., sex, substance abuse, reckless driving, binge eating). J & E • Recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, or threats, or self-mutilating behavior. J & E • Affective instability due to a marked reactivity of mood (e.g., intense episodic dysphoria, irritability, or anxiety usually lasting a few hours and only rarely more than a few days). J & E • Chronic feelings of emptiness. J & E • Inappropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger (e.g., frequent displays of temper, constant anger, recurrent physical fights). J & E • Transient, stress-related paranoid ideation - occurs most frequently in response to a real or imagined abandonment. J & E Daniel J.
