Joe Fortis works for the New York City Fire Department Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. On September 11, 2001, he and his partner were across town during the initial onslaught. He knew they would be needed, so they started rolling in the ambulance heading for Ground Zero. What he found upon arrival was like nothing that could have been imagined. The weeks following when rescue turned to recovery took a toll, but any attempt to bring solace to the family members of the lost was the ultimate goal.
