Hersonissos (Χερσόνησος) and Malia (Μάλια) are two coastal town in the north east of the Greek island of Crete (Κρήτη). Other coastal towns nearby are Stalis or Stalida (Σταλίδα), Anissaras (Ανισσαράς), Koutouloufari (Κουτουλουφάρι) and Sissi (Sisi or Σίσι). These is the touristic area of the island of Crete close to the city of Heraklion and the international airport of Nikos Kazantzakis. Crete is the largest of the Greek Islands where approximately 600,000 permanent residents live. In Malia there is a Minoan Palace, in Sisi the ancient city of Kefali (Buffo Hill) and in Hersonissos the early christian cathedral. In Hersonissos there is the famous Star Beach and Malia has a small island with a church in front of the beach known as Afentis Christos.
