Thomas Carlyle's words represent the dominant view of history for centuries; history's trajectory is primarily shaped by the actions of powerful individuals. On the other hand, historical academia has diversified beyond this concept, emphasising the influence of social groups and movements. However, controversies surrounding statues and individuals have raised questions about the reliance of the public understanding of history on individuals. In turn, this House asks: should we reject the 'Great Man' theory of history?
