Full Western Movie and there’s gonna be A GUNFIGHT. In fact, that’s the name of this little seen western from 1971 that stars two icons. Movie legend Kirk Douglas as an aging gunfighter. And country western superstar Johnny Cash as…an aging gunfighter. These two giants light up the screen. Especially, Kirk. He never gave a bad performance. Johnny on the other hand reeked with charisma and talent but his movie roles never seemed to give him a part that reflected his great talent. Johnny’s pairing with Kirk may have helped because in A GUNFIGHT, Cash gives what may be his most natural performance. The film is directed by Lamont Johnson (CATTLE ANNIE & LITTLE BRITCHES, TWILIGHT ZONE) who seems to have given Cash just the right amount of direction and…freedom to shine. In scenes together, the two stars seem to energize each other. The Man in Black is great as a down on his luck gunfighter…dressed, of course, in black. While their characters like each other, both Kirk and Johnny see a way to cash out…as it were, by killing each other. They are both legendary gunfighters, gladiators, bullfighters who decide to sell tickets for a shoot-out to the death. Winner takes all! Where is it to be held? In a bull ring, of course. There’s a lot going on in this film. Fame. Friendship. Death. Shot in New Mexico, A GUNFIGHT is purportedly the first major film funded by Native Americans. Their stipulation, it must not be shot abroad. Also in the cast is the wonderful Jane Alexander, Karen Black, Dana Elcar, Raf Vallone and, in his film debut, 21-year-old charismatic Keith Carradine in a short sequence as a young gunfighter looking to make a reputation for himself.
