Follow along in this travel documentary as we complete our Overland Version of the Lake Superior Circle Tour. The SUPERIOR OVERLAND TOUR. We spend 10 Days driving the 1300+ route around the lake camping off-grid with one exception. We have been planning our route and camp spots over the last few years to get the most out of what WE would like to see. (We cant see everything in 10 days.) Joining us on this overland adventure is our dear friend Phil from “Old Man Old Truck” and Jordan, Cait and Eden from Midwest_funrnnr. Our Journey begins by crossing the Macanac Bridge. Gateway to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Our time in the UP encompasses many staple sights like Tahquamenon lower and upper falls, Whitefish Point, Munising, Marquette Ore Docks and beautiful backcountry trails. Our camp spots are all waterside but each completely different. We camped in the dunes next to White Fish Point. A perfect beach at Mouth of the Huron and the rocky shores in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Once in the Keweenaw we see waterfalls, rivers, lighthouses, red clay trails and try some local delicacies. Including Eagle River falls and the Jampot. This remote area is one of our favorites. We attend a local overlanding event KOAR. And visit some perfectly preserved towns like Copper Harbor. After a few days it’s time to move forward going clockwise around Lake Superior. Once off the peninsula we head for the Porcupine Mountains and Lake of the Clouds. Followed by a trip to the Stormy Cromer factory. Then land at the Saxon Falls for camp after entering Wisconsin. A quick drive through Wisconsin we are in Minnesota and heading North East through Duluth. This is where the stops become more frequent. We see how logging used to be done at Tom’s Logging Camp, visit many more waterfalls including Gooseberry falls and Beaver Falls. Visit some more ore docks and sample some beers at Castle Danger Brewing in Two Harbors. See the legendary Split Rock Lighthouse (legally flown from offsite). The last stop before another perfect waterside camp spot was Grand Marais where all the stars aligned to see sunset illuminate sailboats and lighthouses from the roof of Voyageur Brewery. Before crossing into Canadas Ontario we check off a must see at Hollow Rock. After an easy border crossing we find ourselves in Superior Country and Thunder Bay for lunch. Today’s destination is Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, Thunder Bay Lookout and the sleepy perfect town of Silver Islet. Marie Louise Lake Campground is the only campground we take advantage of on this trip. Leaving the park we are surprised with Eagle Canyon Adventures and Canada's longest suspension footbridge which is 600 feet long. Some highway miles later we are at Nipigon and its lookout tower and Nipigon River Bridge. This is the highest town and where the tour turns east around the lake. It’s also when the stops space out and becomes more scenic. After a stop at Island Pottery and lunch in Schreiber we head to a remote camp on Worthington Bay. The road/trail to the bay does get a bit technical. We get in a bit of trouble when we make the rookie mistake of driving on a pebble beach thinking it was packed sand. After eventually getting off we experience one of the best (right off the) beach spots of the trip. The following day presents small towns, Aguasabon Falls, Algoma Country, the birthplace of Winnie the Poo, more beautiful Trans Canadian highway, and the town of Wawa and the Moore general store. Back on the road we hit Old Woman Bay and finally land at a mystery abandoned side road camp spot. This was the best spot of the trip. The last day takes us to the Chippewa Falls and back into the states, completing our trip back at the Macanac bridge.
