LIVE: Donald Trump Gives Surprise Announcement on Government Shutdown

President Trump said on Tuesday (September 30) that many federal workers may be laid off if the U.S. government shuts down over an impasse between Democrats and Republicans in Congress. Washington is bracing for a fast-approaching government shutdown, as Republicans and Democrats appear unlikely to reach an agreement that would extend funding past a midnight deadline. Trump also gave Hamas three to four days to accept a U.S.-backed peace plan for Gaza, warning of "a very sad end" if the group rejected the proposal that he said was close to ending the two-year-old conflict. Speaking to reporters in Washington, Trump said Israeli and Arab leaders had already endorsed the plan and that "we’re just waiting for Hamas" to make its decision. He gave the group "three or four days" to respond. Asked whether there was scope for further talks on the proposal, he replied: "Not much." Trump also said his administration is considering attacking drug cartels "coming by land" in Venezuela after the U.S. military struck several boats it claimed were carrying illicit drugs from that country. "Now we'll look at cartels," he told reporters as he left the White House. "We're going to look very seriously at cartels coming by land." Trump also said he would meet with top U.S. military leaders on Tuesday and that he would fire any of them on the spot if he didn't like them. "I'm going to be meeting with generals and with admirals and with leaders, and if I don't like somebody, I'm going to fire them right on the spot," Trump said.
