Machining a Casing Drive Sub (from 100kg of SOLID steel!)
HAL Heavy Duty Machining Australia
@halheavydutyAbout
Welcome to our heavy duty machine shop. We specialise in the drilling industry and are located in Central Qld, Australia. My name is Matt, and in a nutshell we make super heavy duty gear that drillers typically love breaking. Hydraulic cylinders, drilling crossover subs, drill bits, recovery gear... the list goes on. If it's drilling related, we do it. WHY HAL? We chose to name the channel after my late grandad Hal. After working on a drill rig since the age of 14, Grandad then "retired" from drilling at age 60 to "the machine shop" ... and then proceeded to work until his 87th birthday. THE CHANNEL This little channel is just about sharing some of the weird and wonderful gear we get to make in the machine shop... and how drillers manage to break it. I upload once a fortnight (or weekly if possible...) and really appreciate all the comments from around the world. You guys are awesome. Thank you.
Video Description
Today we're making a casing drive sub from a 100kg billet of 4140 steel. This one is a bit of a rush job, so we're just going to crack into it. We'll be usng a bunch of different tools to get the job done, but the most fun is the 62mm HTS drill. And we'll be going all the way with it. 320mm deep... full steam ahead. Enjoy. About HAL Heaavy Duty: We're a real life machine shop for a 60 year old drilling company located in Central Queensland, Australia. Our job is to keep rigs running in the field - fixing all the stuff drillers break and creating all the custom gear they need to get the job done! We run two CNC's, manual repair lathes, a few mills and a big green Megabore Lathe we call "THE HULK"... and are constantly having to make weird and wonderful tools for odd (usually oversize) jobs. We're a little shop that takes on big projects, and the latest is our MEGADRILL project where we're manufacturing a 3.0m (10 foot!) drill bit that'll weigh upward of 20 tonnes and we're getting ready to send it 250m (800+ feet) deep. If you want to catch up on the progress... here's the latest on the project! https://youtu.be/OKPr15PucGQ?si=dTVN39xDaAYi3Je9 https://youtu.be/mK3slsayuZM?si=kB4koTj7MrkngnlJ https://youtu.be/qtsz7cLtDY8?si=LL-ip0p-M-FVsoTs https://youtu.be/j_g8wMRu7wc?si=_PO-F-opHgggzjU1 https://youtu.be/r796Mw4j1gM?si=_9yPWEgUw4b10d5e We release our weekly video at 1pm Friday (AEST), so be sure to subscribe if you want to see stuff you really won't find anywhere else!
