Magnitude 7.6 earthquake rocks Japan, triggers tsunami warnings

A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off northern Japan on Monday, prompting tsunami warnings and orders for residents to evacuate. Tsunami warnings were issued for the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate, and tsunamis from 20 to 50 cm high were observed at several ports, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said. Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said a response team has been established to assess the damage and assist with evacuation.
