Video Description
Mo Gilligan is a very funny man - he’s one of the biggest comedians in the UK, he’s hosted the BRITs, numerous TV shows and is currently on a world tour. He’s hugely successful, but what happens when you achieve all your dreams? Do you feel fulfilled? Or lost without that direction of a goal? Mo’s someone I’ve wanted to have on the show for a while, so I’m really excited to have him join me on the show this week. Mo chatted to me about his journey - from growing up on an estate and fostering a sense of community, to being catapulted into the limelight when his comedy skits went viral. He was candid about how difficult he found that time and his late 20s; the pressure, the expectations, and the weight of success didn’t fulfil him in the way he’d imagined. And as someone who is also dyslexic, we bonded over how being the class clown was both a way to connect and a survival tool in school. Looking back, he credits his younger self—the daydreamer who never took life too seriously—with shaping the comedian he is today. This conversation is a reminder that no matter how successful someone looks from the outside, we all face struggles. And sometimes, the most important thing we can do is give ourselves permission to feel. 00:00 Coming up on this week’s episode 00:30 Intro from Jamie 01:05 The moment I knew I wasn’t going to be a footballer 02:45 Growing up on an estate and the community around me 04:40 Realising I had less than the other kids at school 08:00 Jamie and I crack up over a pool joke 09:10 How dyslexia led me to comedy as a way to connect 13:00 Why being silly as an adult is underrated 15:30 The struggles of my late twenties 18:45 I succeeded but still felt unhappy—why? 20:45 Jamie opens up about his own struggles 23:00 I’m no longer embarrassed about not knowing what rizz means 24:10 I didn’t cry until therapy in my late twenties 28:20 Buying things just to fill the void 30:00 I had everything I asked for but was still unhappy 32:35 How I approach crowd work at my comedy shows 37:00 That time I put someone in their place on stage 38:40 Why I started my podcast: Beginning, Middle, & End 42:25 My wild trip to Vegas 45:30 The final eight questions #MOGILLIGAN #GREATCOMPANYPODCAST #JAMIELAING If you enjoyed this episode, please click follow - we have so many great guests like this one, you won't want to miss out! -- You can also follow us on: Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/greatcompanypodcast/ TikTok | https://www.tiktok.com/@greatcompanypodcast -- If you or anyone you know has been affected by suicidal thoughts, you can head to CALM to find support: www.thecalmzone.net -- THE CREDITS Exec Producer: Jemima Rathbone Assistant Producer: Gurlina Heer Video: Jake Ji Video Editor: Ryley Kirby Social Media: Laura Coughlan -- Great Company is an original podcast from JamPot
