In the Mongolian steppe is the iconic Erdene Zuu Monastery where Tibetan Buddhism first mixed with local ancestral beliefs. The monks there live a secluded life. Their day consists of studying, performing rituals for the local population and meditating in harmony with their natural surroundings. The Gandan Temple is in the capital, Ulan Bator, and is the centre of religious practice.
