I’m a 23-year-old first-year salaryman in Tokyo. I’m broke, single, and I spent a lot of this year feeling like I was one bad day away from breaking. I worked too much, got diagnosed with an adjustment disorder, and had to learn how to survive in a city that doesn’t really slow down. On New Year’s Eve, I walked through Monzen-Nakacho—an old downtown area people call “Kyoto in Tokyo.” I visited Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine and Fukagawa Fudo-do Temple, made a small prayer, pulled an omikuji fortune, and ate yakisoba from a street stall as my last meal of the year. I’m not religious, but I like these places. They’re calm. They remind me that Japan has both light and darkness, and that it’s okay if I do too. I started this channel because I needed somewhere I didn’t have to pretend.
